INCREASING SURGICAL SKILLS OF THE VETERINARY PROFESSIONAL

Veterinarians interested in surgery may lack mentored opportunities to develop their skills with new or rarely practised techniques, leading them to uncertainty when needing to do those procedures in private practice.

Challenges of learning surgery

  • No exposure to cases

There are a lot of surgical procedures and not all of them are required for us to perform on a regular basis, meaning we don't get to practise them that much.

  • Difficulty with mentored experiences

It's not always possible to have an experienced vet to guide us through the surgery or mentor us while we are doing the procedure.

  • Limited learning from available experiences

Even when we manage to scrub in, we may be on our own and end up "winging it". On the other hand, learning opportunities in the form of courses are often based on models and not always easily applicable to the scenarios we encounter in daily practice.

Difficulties with learning surgical procedures

In daily practice, we often practise the common procedures, such as neutering. Other surgical procedures, often those required in emergency settings, are usually performed by more experienced colleagues who may not have the time to teach us, or, if we are not comfortable doing them, we end up referring the patient and losing the learning opportunity.

THE COURSE EXPERIENCE

The Soft Tissue Surgery Academy is an intensive learning experience lasting for 5 days in a professional yet welcoming environment. You will be guided throughout the entire course and will have the opportunity to practise your techniques in several common surgical procedures both in models and in live animals.

The focus of this course is to give you practical experience and help you with tips for your daily work.

Guided

YOUR LEARNING EXPERIENCE

What to expect

We work with Animal Spay Neuter International just outside of Bucharest to perform surgery in street and owned dogs and cats in need. You will be able to perform surgery with the standards and conditions you would expect to find in UK private clinical practice.

You will be able to practise different techniques, such as:

  • Advanced neutering, where we will introduce you to specific techniques to reduce your incision site while gaining improved exposure and safety in your ligatures

  • Amputations, such as tail and toe amputations

  • Abdominal surgery, such as enterotomy and enterectomy, gastrotomy and splenectomy

  • Other common procedures, such as mastectomies and lumpectomies
